Armenian Argentinean tennis star David Nalbandian stopped world number one Roger Federe s two and a half year unbeaten run in 24 tennis finals 35 straight wins and his 2005 81-3 record by defeating him at the Qi Zhong stadium in Shanghai China Masters Finals 6-7(4) 6-7(11) 6-2 6-1 7-6(3) in a match that lasted five hours.
Nalbandian had never come back from two sets to love down in his entire career but after losing the first two sets 7-6 7-6 he came to the court a different man and took the next two sets 6-2 and 6-1.
When everything seemed over at 4-0 in the fifth - after Nalbandian had won 16 out of the 19 games - Federer pounced back to lead 6-5 serving at 30-0 for the championship. But Nalbandian was not to let this opportunity slip away. He broke the undisputed Swiss world champion to take the decider to a tie break and won it 7-3 together with a a prize money totalling 1.4 million dollars.
Nalbandian had lost to Federer in the opening round robin confrontation at the Masters Cup in three sets a week earlier and had declared against all odds that he would beat Federer in Sunday s final.
The Armenian from Argentina was a last minute addition to the top eight prestigious invitation event after Andy Roddick pulled out of the tournament due to injury. Nalbandian was "dragged" to China from his holidays. His win places him six in the world which is his career best.
Two weeks ago David Nalbandian had lost to Cypriot sensation Marcos Baghdatis in Basel 7-6 6-2.
