Armenian Church Of Kayseri Under Attack -
Provoked by editorial cartoons published in an irresponsible Danish newspaper mocking the prophet Mohamed Muslims continue to attack Western establishments and representations in numerous countries. Anti-Western and Anti-Christian demonstrations are continuing in Turkey as well.
According to information received at the Armenian Patriarchate in Istanbul from the sparse Armenian community still living in Kayseri unidentified individuals brandished firearms and opened fire ten times on the entrance portal of the historic St. Gregory The Illuminator church. Simultaneously the unidentified assailants shouted Islamist and anti-Christian slogans.
The Kayseri (Cesaria) authorities immediately increased security around the church; permanent guards have been stationed in its yard.
Armenian Patriarch of Constantinople Mesrob II who is deeply concerned by this latest development stated that Moslems have the natural right to express their indignation in the face of the disturbing editorial cartoons published in a Danish newspaper but violently attacking places of worship belonging to minorities is incomprehensible and can be given a different political connotation. His Holiness reiterated that any kind of violence cannot be justified and remains reprehensible.
