Vatican Foreign Minister Ends Visit To Armenia

Yerevan September 22: Armenia s foreign affairs minister Vartan Oskanian received September 21 Vatican s foreign minister Archbishop Jean-Louis Tauran who flew here Saturday from neighboring Georgia. Armenian foreign ministry said the conversation between the two men was centered on further development of contacts between Vatican and Armenia. Minister Oskanian was quoted as saying that Armenia appreciates highly Vatican s role in building peace expanding dialogue between nations preaching mutual understanding and defending human rights across the globe. Oskanian also thanked Vatican minister for supporting Armenia in its efforts to fully integrate with European organizations and involve in ecumenical movement. The minister also briefed the Vatican diplomat on the current state of things concerning the resolution of Nagorno Karabagh conflict. Oskanian also thanked Vatican for sponsoring a hospital in Armenian Ashotsk region populated mainly by Armenian Catholics. The hospital furnished with modern equipment has been operating since 1991. It was donated to Armenia by Pope John Paul II after the 1988 destructive earthquake. Both men underlined boosting contacts between Vatican and Armenia in culture education and scientific areas. Archbishop Jean-Louis Tauran met also on Sunday with president Robert Kocharian. Apart from exchanging their views on variety of issues they also spoke about the necessity of opening Vatican s representation in Armenia. Archbishop Jean-Louis Tauran arrived in Armenia from Georgia where he was supposed to sign a pact with ex-Soviet republic defining inter-state relations but it was postponed at the last minute on Friday bowing to street protests and calls by the dominant Orthodox Church fearful of losing influence over its flock. Public opinion for some reason finds establishing such relations unacceptable.
